Fire Islanders Have Their Noses in Books
Volume 49, Issue 7
By April Jimenez
One of the greatest things about being on the beach is the quiet time, time many use to read. This past week one of the most awesome book releases took place: the sixth book in the Harry Potter series. While it’s tough to find a circle of Potter aficionados, Fire Islanders are certainly taking to the books. Here is what they are reading.
“I am reading Close Case by Alafair Burke. She is the daughter of James Lee Burke. I love his stuff; I read all of his books. This is her second book – I would definitely recommend it, the first was great. I am huge mystery buff.”
-Nancy Stone from Westchester, staying in Ocean Beach.

“Well, right this second I am reading the newspaper – that is how I start my day. I’m really reading The Fourth of July by James Patterson. I’m addicted to him. I have read all of his books except “Lifeguard and London Bridge.”
-Bob, an Ocean Beach lifeguard from Oakdale.
 |
“I am reading Town and Country [magazine]. This is the only time I can catch up on my reading; I brought 30 magazines with me.” – Joan Walsh
“I’m reading The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason. I’m not sure what it is about. I picked it up at Princeton University – this is the only way that I get to read.”
-Joan and Tim Walsh, from Philadelphia, staying in Seaview.

“No comment,” 2-year-old Noah offered at first but after careful reconsideration he said, “My favorite book is Froggy Goes Swim – flip flip flop flop, goggles and snorkels,” he recites from his book. “I like books about trucks too.”
-Noah Schwartz, from New Jersey, staying in Seaview.
 |
“ New York magazine: I read it for the crossword puzzles.”
–Mike Morrow, a 40- year Seaview resident.
 |
“I am reading a journal on content literacy and education. I am basically doing homework while I get a tan – I’m multitasking. It’s interesting and valuable information. It will help me become a better teacher but I wouldn’t say ‘Hey, pick up this journal, it is great reading.’”
-Lindsay Cohen, a teacher from New Jersey, staying in Seaview.
 |
“Mohawk, by Richard Russo. It’s about a small town in the Adironacks. It is the same author who wrote Empire Falls and I really liked that one.”
-Michael Rosenblum, from Park Slope, Brooklyn, staying in Seaview.
 |
““I’m reading The New York Times because it is relaxing. [My husband] is reading the sports page.”
– Susan and Howard Kaden, from Merrick, staying in Seaview.
