Crime Up in Saltaire

A Bay Shore man was arrested in the early morning hours of July 30 for attacking a Saltaire security guard, in an incident that officials say was part of an uptick in violent crime in the village this summer.

Bay Shore resident Ryan Greene, 19, allegedly hit David Gorby with his cell phone when the guard approached to help him after he fell of his bike. Greene used racial slurs during the attack, and also against the Suffolk County police officer who responded and arrested him, according to Village Trustee Hugh O’Brien.

“This was a really ugly incident,” said O’Brien. “The guy who did this was not part of the community.”

Greene was charged with harassment in the second degree. Gorby was taken to a local hospital and treated for a minor concussion as well as cuts and bruises. He missed three days of work because of his injuries.

It was the fourth violent incident of the summer, said O’Brien.

“The whole summer seems to be a little more out of control,” O’Brien said. “There’s a lot more going on compared not just to last summer but as compared to ever.”

At the village trustees meeting Saturday, August 19, residents asked if there was a connection between the violence surge and this season’s legalization of night bike riding.

“I really don’t know if we can say there’s a link,” said security officer Joe Walter, who was present at the attack on his colleague but would offer no further comment.
